[Level] little steps + portals = big steps

Postby shua » 12 Nov 2009, 22:31

this is just a proof of concept level. download it and give me some feedback.
You should probably toggle the physics, let the 1st portal fall, and then toggle playing, or else it won't work right.
Set the big portal and the light to not active. i don't know why but the active state doesn't save when i save it.
If the boxes don't go through when you toggle physics, try toggling playmode, it should probably work if you bump it a couple times.

That's is cool how you turned presents into stairs.
The level works perfectly

thanks, i tried making the stairs as part of the floor in blender, but for some reason it didn't work, then i tried non-active boxes, but it glitched too much, so i just put holes in the floor and it seems to work fine enough now.

the next step would be that you have to collect all the boxes first, put them in the holes and then drop the portal on them

Yeah, except i don't know how to pick stuff up in playmode.

edit: or have another portal the same size as the big portal across from the big portal, and have go through that too, coming out at another area. that would be cool.

The boxes might fall over, and they have problems staying in the holes anyway, to have the player have to push them, i'd probably have to widen the holes. I'll probably try it though.

I mean add some sort of obstacle that the player can't stand over and use as steps, to prevent the boxes from going all the way thru once pushed thru a portal

that's what i was thinking and kind of have holes in them with wider parts at the top that guide the boxes into the holes.

Now it makes sense.
I just needed to visualize it and the question mark kind of threw me off.

the question mark was because i was asking if that suggestion was acceptable, kinda like, you said your lemonade was a bit bitter, so i ask "add some sugar?"

Re: [Level] little steps + portals = big steps

all right, i'm working on a new version which is a little more interactive, but i'm trying to make a hinge, i have two 'u' shaped holders that are coming out of the floor and are part of the floor, and an upside down 'T' thing. i don't know what i'm doing wrong but the 'T' thing just sits in the two 'u's and no amount of pushing will make it hinge. i heard something about someone making a portal prop that worked, but you couldn't walk through it, i'm pretty sure i'm having the same problem.
here's what i have so far and where i'm stuck
Image
highplaces.zip
(81.7 KiB) Downloaded 9 times
(extract into pseudoform folder)(the .blend file in /levels/highplaces includes both objects)
also, when i give things the "wood" material, it just makes them a light brown instead of the wood of the chair or frame. i copied the chair.prop and changed it to fit my things but the light brown is all i get. thanks :teapot:

edit: newer one farther down

You have to Unwrap it. (Link)

PS.: I think the blend file is an old one. If you upload the newest version I'll try to fix it.

sorry, i posted this as a new topic, but i'll ask here too, does anyone know how to export sub-meshes in blender, because when i do it, the exporter either exports one, or both as seperate meshes, it won't export both as one mesh. B|
