Preparing for release...

Postby Svenstaro » 20 Sep 2009, 05:02

Since many of you have been waiting so patiently, I thought it might be a good idea to talk about what you guys can expect for release or rather, what you can not expect. I don't want to ruin the fun before it has even begun, I want you guys to have realistic expectations about what we can provide. The first release, v0.2.0.x "Leela" will not deliver a sacred game with lots of content, re-playability, originality or anything else that should be in a game. The first release will feel a lot like a tech demo because frankly, that is what it is.

"So why are you releasing an unfinished piece of crap?" you might ask. Let me explain. We have been developing Portalized (the engine) for 2 years on and off while we have been developing Pseudoform (the game, the project, the everything else) for literally just a week. We thought now might be a good time to start the rapid development cycle we originally had hoped for by utilizing the support of the community to create content. What we will be releasing is technically capable of creating sets of levels, props and pretty much all basic elements you'd find in any commercial game. Faster release cycle hopefully means getting more people involved and more motivation.

This means it is mostly up to you guys to help us shape the actual game! We will regularly test community submissions, stitch them together and create a game out of it. The content you put up on the forums will be released in the official game builds as long as you produce quality stuff. We will provide guides and other help in case you get stuck.

Expect there to be bugs, crashes and tears. The game will be available for Linux i686, Linux x86_64 and Windows 32bit at first.

Now that expectations have been sufficiently lowered, dear brave souls who are still reading, please stick with us and create content. If you don't know how to model, learn it. Getting started with Blender is easy and the effort pays off. If you want a guide to something specific to Pseudoform, post a request. The time to come after the first release will probably be the hardest time this project has yet to face and only the support of the community will determine whether we can make Portalized into Pseudoform!

Dear community, please help us make this project awesome. :teapot:

Well I've been a lazy ass for a while and did nothing to help, but since the community will be helping with development I should probably get to work.

Very excited for the 22nd, or whenever it'll be released. ;)

This is what I was expecting, the level editor, and props and levels to play with. I knew that this game would be community driven, as I said before, I am very excited for this "unfinished piece of crap." :P

Omg my pc broke and I just fixed it today hoping I didn't miss the first release. Yay. I have animation and video classes In school and 3d classes 2nd simester so expect lots of stuff from me. I have about 2.5 years of experience with blender (which is what we use in class) but mostly with game engine so I'm totally fluent with the interface so it will be easy to learn some awesome modelling skills and make all I can to support the game. I'm also excited to make some levels and ideas and stuff with many already in mind. Good luck with the first release. :D

Probably since it looks cooler and when Pseudoform goes public, it makes sense to start calling it Pseudoform which would also make sense to use the new site.

I use Blender all the time for fun renders and graphics work, so I'll lend a hand in content creation!
I do enjoy making levels too, but I probably won't make very many, as my levels (in any game) either tend to be so obscure that only I can remember how to finish them, or so easy that even a chimp can do it. :P

Getting started with Blender is the fucking hell! b-(
But yes, it really pays off. I'll never regret any minute I've been learning Blender :)

I'm looking forward to design a game as no one has ever seen it before with you guys and this seems to be the right place to say:
This community really rocks!

I realy like the player-model.

It's a cool idea that you don't use a human.

but why does he have two arms (two portals? / any second weapon? / looks better?)

ps: I cant wait for it...

He doesn't actually have those arms. Those were dummy "guns" I made up very quickly to show off what it would look like. They will not be in the release. The model will be, however.

Time to write some docs for puzzle design! Might have to go replay portal a few times to get myself into the portal vibe.

Here you had me thinking that a Teatank would be the player model...

Also, chances are, it'll run fine on a 64 Bit, right?

Double also, Be assured, as I was a little disappointing at making content before release,
I can do much better now that I will have the actual application that runs.
Best System: WindowsXP-32Bit-Pro, nVidia 8800 GT, Intel e6850 (3.0 Ghz), 4 Gigs Memory
Worst: WindowsXP-32Bit-Home, Intel Integrated, Intel Celeron (1.5 Ghz), 512 Mb Memory
(Just good enough to run Disorder 39 release with no artifacts.)

You could make it that way I'm sure, it's a game developed around community customization!
Though it would look silly in third person...

"So why are you releasing an unfinished piece of crap?"
You know, I don't think anyone (who's not a noob to this) is asking that.. Most everyone who's followed this project understands very well that it will start as a tech demo. In fact, that's what many of us wanted, seeing as it was based somewhat on "The Room", which was a tech demo everyone wanted to try, but never could.
Most are asking the exact opposite, "Why wait this long to release what is essentially a beta/tech-demo?" lol, not that I disagree with that decision at this point, seeing as what you've created in all this time, will let many of us get involved and possibly be a part of the creation process, from here on out. Which wouldn't have been the case with an earlier release. So, thankful for that.

But of course, for the sake of the newbies to the project, and the many who will arrive once it is released, it's still a good idea to state these intentions.
Keep up the good work! ^_^;
