User Interfaces Progress

Postby null » 01 Aug 2009, 01:00

First mockup we made:
Image

Notice the overall-all-around-ugliness :D

Second mockup:
Image

Alright, we realized we need something a lot prettier [-o<

Third mockup:
Image

Alright, now that's what we're aiming for :B

And this is from when we were deciding how to do the window skinning effectively:

All-in-all, the last week has been quite productive :D

It's a pretty important part of any application - a pretty GUI is much more likely to attract people than some ugly "developer-GUI".

You are tottaly right. Like the Ubuntu interface. It's more interesting than Windows. :)

Awww... I liked the more simplistic approach of the last one, but whatever it takes to get more players is fine with me. The ability to change the theme would be cool.

You DO have that ability and there will be a third skin "elegant" that will be mostly simplistic.

I like it, but maybe a way to see more object thumbnails at once would be more productive.

Is it possible to do a system that involves Tabs and organizing objects by category?
It looks like you had it in your "Second Mockup".

I really like how the 3rd mockup takes up less screen space though.
Almost like a HUD instead of an all surrounding frame. :)

Looks quite good. I take it that the users can skin it themselves?

The only thing I'd suggest is that that it fails more gracefully; if a skin is missing or incomplete, the GUI falls back on a default. Perhaps it could be something ugly and magenta so it's easy to see where things went wrong.

I think they'd work like the tabs and such for different windows in Photoshop CS4 work? That'd be nice.

Also, totally skipped over the video until now, but... null speaks! :D Your New York accident caught me a little off guard at first, but very nice, technical video. :D

P.S. Please use a headset next time so I'm not riding the volume control on my speakers. (Just kidding ;) :P)

Nice, i liked the crystal skin. I also liked for like apple stuff or ipod interface where everything is all shiny. i thought that was cool. What if you added some kind of realtime shaders for the interface? LOL like reflections and shadows. then you can set up the lighting, then you can put like lamps in it and have like lighting presets for your 2D interface. LMAO that would be freaking awesome XDD. But i like the progress you're getting, I usually check by here every day, also, If you're still interested in testing for Intel graphics cards, my dad digged one up for me. It's an Intel x48. He has some others i'm not sure about, I also got an Nvidia EN9500GT if you're interested ;) i'll post more in my sig. BTW, i like the accent XD

Thanks guys.

1) my accent sounds kind of weird when I record it, oh well

2) yes, a more graceful fail would perhaps make sense

3) not everything is implemented yet, there will be tabs and multibuttons and several other elements (like tooltips), things are still changing

This is why most people will be like, "WTF, I don't sound like that!" and sometimes even cringe when they hear themselves talk. o_O You're not used to the voice that everyone else hears. :D

You don't sound weird, I just wasn't expecting your heavy New York accent because I live in the midwest. :P

*Facepalm* That was pretty stupid of me, the user made content in this game is gonna' be endless... I should've thought before I posted.

P.S. Heck, the new GUI is nicer!

Kinda like the Source Engines' missing texture replacement? e.g. Black and purple.
